Janisch Wins on Wall Inner Oval Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic ATQMRA

Matt Janisch of Nazareth Pa earned his second feature win of the season at Wall Stadium in wingless competition on Wall's inner oval after a heated Battle with early race leader Ryan Tidman. Heat Races were won by Don Zrinski and Geoffrey Sutton. The ATQMRA Racing on Wall's inner oval have become known for their exciting race starts coming in the Box a quarter of the way down the straight away resulting in five wide racing when the green flag flies. Next up for the ATQMRA is a trip to Bethel Motor Speedway for winged racing on Saturday June 18th.

A feature race front row of Flying Ryan Tidman and Don the Snake Zrinski took the initial green flag with cars fanning out five wide in the Start box. But it didn't work out that well when the cars entered the tight turns on Wall's inner oval as Zrinski and several other competitors tangled bringing out a caution before a lap was complete. Involved was Season opening Winner Geoffrey Sutton, Ron Mullen, Tim Proctor, Buddy Sload, Kerry Irwin, Anthony Payne, Matt Janisch and Steve Whitt. The incident was keyed when Zrinski and Multi time series Champion Don Adams tangled mid turn.

The restart saw a front row of Tidman and Adams take the green with Tidman gaining the advantage. Sutton and Janisch quickly made their way through the field and put themselves in contention by lap five from their 12th and 13th starting positions.

A tangle between front Running Mark Yoder and Joey Bailey brought out the caution when Yoder spun exiting turn four. The restart saw Sutton take to the third groove and sweep from his fourth starting position to nearly taking the lead from Tidman entering the third turn. The tight racing jumbled the leaders and gave Janisch the opening he needed to retake the lead after being set back for jumping an earlier restart.

Sutton's day ended on lap 12 when his engine expired slowing the action one more time. From there on it was Janisch all the way earning the victory over Tidman with Joey Bailey in the Alan Mollot 51 Badger finishing third. Jeff Kot and Buddy Sload rounded out the top five. Mark Yoder rebounded to post a sixth place finish with Anthony Payne rolling across the line seventh followed by fellow Rookies Chris Hirt and Joey Payne III with Kerry Irwin rounding out the top ten.

The first heat race saw Don Zrinski take the checker with a lap six pass of Yoder to take the heat race win over Yoder followed by Anthony Payne with Joey Bailey, Tim Proctor, and Don Adams making the invert.

The second heat saw Geoffrey Sutton sweep into the lead early and lead every lap to post the win. Matt Roselli who was racing a brand new Laffler Chassis car finished second after being the fastest TQ in Practice but didn't start the feature due to an uncharacteristic mechanical issue. Jeff Kot, Matt Janisch, Ryan Tidman, and Buddy Sload rounded out the redraw cars.

ATQMRA News and Notes:  Feature winner Matt Jansich sits atop the point standings after backing up his win at Mahoning a few weeks ago with another feature victory at Wall. This marks his second feature win at Wall after winning the Turkey Derby to cap his 2014 Championship season in style on the high banks of Wall Stadium. Janisch in Victory lane thanked his Father Mark for Building the strong Engines that power him to Victory in his Yuhas Chassis car.

Joey Bailey wasn't planning to race this weekend's race at Wall with his Zuzzalo 02 sidelined with engine problems from Mahoning Valley. Multi time Championship winning car owner Alan Mollot was without a driver when regular shoe Jon Gambutti was under the weather. Mollot put the 2013 ATQMRA Rookie of the year Bailey in the car and had to be happy with the podium finish on after struggling to get hooked up on Wall's flat inner oval. Joey is the second generation of Bailey to race the Famous red 51 car following in his father's footsteps behind the wheel of the potent Mollot mount that has countless feature wins on Wall's high banks and at just about every track the ATQMRA has competed at across the years.

Second Generation ATQMRA competitor Rookie Chris Hirt made his debut in the Tim Proctor 97 earning an eighth place finish. Chris' father Ken Hirt was a regular competitor with the ATQMRA through the 90s and early 2000's in the Rick Arnold 78 cars.

Ten Time ATQMRA Champion Don Adams returned to competition in the Lawshie 52 car after sorting out some handling issues the car was fast enough to earn a spot in the feature redraw and a 12th place finish.

Steve Whitt, Steve Craig and Don Zrinski made their first races of the season. Zrinski following his heat win looked poised to earn another strong finish but wasn't able to complete a lap after getting bent up on the initial race start. The Steve's of Whitt and Craig were both DNF's in the feature.

Roselli was credited with leading lap one but Sutton was able to make an inside move to take the early lead. Several restarts before half way bunched the field for double file restarts with Janisch and Sutton remaining one two with Roselli in third. Fourth finishing Flying Ryan Tidman battled with Roselli, both in Laffler Chassis race cars for the third spot. They swapped the position several times before Roselli gained the edge after a lap 22 restart.

Fifth across the line was Jeff Kot in his own Badger 95 with Mike Tidaback in the Alan Mollot Badger sixth. Kris Graver who also notched a fifth place finish in the Modified feature rolled across the line 7th in the Janisch 48x as the top finishing Rookie. The second heat had a front row of Austin Fehr and Matt Roselli take the green with Roselli taking the lead and never looking back. He bested sixth starting Buddy Sload in the Colin Martin Spitfire 16 with Kot third. Tidman, Fehr and Mahoning Valley crowd favorite, the "Fightin' Lehighton" Rick Kirkendall rounded out the cars eligible for the feature redraw.

Next up for the ATQMRA is round three of the championship chase at Wall Stadium on Saturday May 14th for more wingless action on Wall's inner bullring. Don the Snake Zrinski has his sights set on making his first season appearance at Wall on the 14th after having several strong showings at Wall in 2015. A handful of teams have designs on making their season debut on the popular Speedway by the Shore's inner flat oval that has helped create resurgent interest in the TQ division.

ATQMRA News and Notes: 2014 ATQMRA Champion and 2005 Rookie of the year Matt Janisch raced to his fourth consecutive Mahoning Valley Speedway opening night feature win in dominant fashion in his white and orange 48. This win gives Janisch eight Career TQ Midget feature event wins at the Circular Mahoning Valley oval. Kris Graver raced the second 48 car that Janisch used to earn the first two wins in his streak earning a heat race win. Three times ATQMRA Champion Mike Tidaback was behind the wheel of the Alan Mollot 51 making his first start at Mahoning Valley in a badger since racing his familiar Petty colored 43 at the Len Duncan Memorial race in 2011. The Popular "Fightin; Lehighton" Rick Kirkendall made his first ever start in a TQ midget in the Metz Racing Driver Development 46 and was all smiles after the feature. A determined Mullen racing team had to overcome some serious adversity to even make the races at Mahoning Valley Saturday. Their tow rig and trailer were vandalized in the early morning and left them with eight flat tires. Not to be deterred the Mullen Team fought through the adversity and arrived at Mahoning in time to finish seventh in their heat race.

Sutton Wins Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic ATQMRA Wall Opener Earns First ATQMRA Feature Victory

Strong field lining up for the season opener at Wall Speedway

Wall Stadium, Wall TownshipNJSaturday April 23, 2016

2014 ATQMRA Rookie of the year Geoffrey Sutton parked the Metz Driver Development BGF Engine 461 in Victory lane at the season opening race at Wall Stadium earning his first career ATQMRA victory. Heat races were won by Pat VanVarick and Flying Ryan Tidman. The Brice's NAPA Auto Parts Clean Start products were handed out to teams at Wall. The Bob Emmons MNO season long Hard Charger program will be back in place for the 2016 season. Next up for the ATQMRA is a trip Mahoning Valley to blister the circular oval in winged competition on Saturday April 30th. Rookie Eligible Pat VanVarick was the highest finishing rookie giving him the Rookie Points lead.

The first heat race was won by Pat VanVarick in his Hyper Hugger Micro Sprint. He charged from his fourth starting position to the lead and fended off the Challenges of Geoffrey Sutton on several restarts. The first heat was slowed by a series of flips by 2015 ATQMRA Rookie of the Year Mike Glaser who went for a high side tumble coming out of the fourth turn. Somehow the car was unharmed in the incident and Glaser returned to finish the heat. Matt Roselli was third followed by 2015 Champion Buddy Sload, 2014 Champion Matt Janisch and 1998 club Champ Jon Gambutti rounded out the drivers eligible for the feature redraw.

The second heat was never seriously in doubt as Ryan Tidman started from the pole by the luck of the draw and outpaced Jeff Kot and Joey Bailey. Brett Conklin, Ron Mullen and Anthony Payne rounded out the qualifiers to be in the Feature redraw.

The feature saw a front row of Anthony Payne and Matt Roselli bring the field down to the green with Roselli using the outside lane to gain the lead through one and two. Geoffrey Sutton followed Roselli into second and turned under Roselli coming out of turn four to lead the first lap and was scored in the lead the remainder of the race.

It wasn't quite that easy however. A lap three caution bunched the field but Sutton was able to maintain the lead and open a gap on second running Roselli. As Sutton started negotiating lap traffic Roselli and a hard charging Ryan Tidman closed to within striking distance of. The three would dice their way though traffic until lap 22 when Roselli would end up turned around coming out of the fourth turn. Sutton would have a pair of tigers on his tail on the ensuing restart with perennial ATQMRA Championship contenders Tidman and Janisch hot on his heels. Sutton was able to fend off Tidman's Challenges and win by a tight .163 seconds. Janisch was third followed by Jeff Kot and VanVarick. Joey Bailey rolled across the line sixth with rookie Mark Yoder seventh. Matt Roselli would recover from his spin to finish eighth Followed by Wall Stadium's Fan Voted Most popular driver and rookie of the year eligible Ronnie the Rocket Mullen with Mike Glaser posting a top ten.

Special thanks goes out to Bill Brice of Brice's NAPA Auto Parts of nearby Freehold, NJ. They are back supporting the ATQMRA with their Clean Start program once again in 2016. They provided each team in attendance with a NAPA 5 gallon bucket containing carb and brake cleaner a roll of shop rags hand cleaner and Mother's Spray wax to help keep the competition clean and looking good.

Bob Emmons has also returned to help support the ATQMRA with the MNO $500.00 Hard Charger award that was presented in 2015 to ATQMRA Champion Buddy Sload. Racers earn passing points by advancing from their feature starting position.

ATQMRA News and Notes: The ATQMRA was eighteen strong for the season opener. Tim Proctor had his beautifully prepared 98T on hand but had his day end early with an uncharacteristic engine failure. 2008 ATQMRA Rookie of the Year and multi race winner as well as past Borger's Speedway Champion Austin Fehr returned to competition with the ATQMRA. Fehr worked though the day adjusting to Wall's challenging flat track. The day saw a Payne owned 67 return to competition for the first time in many years with Joey Payne III at the controls. Payne won 11 out of 17 open Kart races on Wall's inner oval in 2015 and is trying his hand in a Drinan TQ Midget. Payne finished a respectable thirteenth in the main.   Payne's Little brother Anthony picked up a ride in the potent Sload Racing 53 but was out early in the feature. Joey Jr. hopes to have Anthony Payne's Laffler TQ ready for next week's show at Mahoning Valley. Absent on the day was Steve Craig who has designs returning to competition with the organization starting with Mahoning Valley. Following his win Sutton was thankful to Jim Fleishman and Chad Haywood of BGF Engine and Chassis for providing the difference making horsepower to earn the win.

Belmar, NJ. Eric Rudolph from Ransomville, NY was not only good but lucky at the 2015 ATQMRA Turkey Derby at Wall Stadium on Saturday. Rudolph led every lap reroute to pocketing the $1,000 winners share in the Mark Lafler owned Lafler House car in his first outing on Wall's inner oval. Matt Janisch set fast time with Matt Roselli earning a B-Main win. Four of the top finishing cars were disqualified following the race by the ATQMRA Officials for a tread width infraction. Next up for the ATQMRA is a General Membership Meeting this coming Sunday at 10:00 am in Fort Washington, Pa.

Ransomville New York's own Eric Rudolph is an accomplished racer in countless divisions beyond the world of TQ midget racing. He has wins in Modified stock cars on pavement and dirt as well as documented success in TQ midgets indoors. He used his talent as a race car driver coupled with a little luck to earn the thousand dollar winners share at the ATQMRA Turkey Derby. Rudolph drove his way into the redraw by turning the ninth fast lap in qualifications and was lucky enough to pull the number one pill that gave him the pole for the scheduled 30 lap race.

2015 ATQMRA Champion and two time feature winner on Wall's flat track as well as track record holder Buddy Sload charged from his fifth starting position to third on the initial race start. Sload worked his way into second by lap five to challenge Rudolph for the lead. A lap 7 restart would send Sload flipping entering the first turn ending his day. Sload was shaken but unhurt following the incident.

The incident put Ryan Flores into second. He would dog Rudolph the rest of the way but was unable to take the lead away from the Ransomville flyer. His chances for getting the win were cut short as a result of the race being shortened due to the impending storm front that was moving in.

The TQ midgets haven't had this strong of a field of cars at the annual Turkey Derby at Wall in many years. With 35 cars on hand and only 26 positions open for the feature it set up a situation where some racers were going to be watching the feature. Qualifications for the race were done by way of European style Time trials where 5 groups of seven cars were given four green flag laps to run their fastest lap. The top twelve would go into a redraw and the next 12 would go into the A-main straight up from time. The final two positions would be the top two finishers in the B-Main.

2014 ATQMRA Champion and the winner of that year's Turkey Derby Matt Janisch would set fast time. Janisch would redraw 7th but would be taken off the track as a result of putting down fluid. Matt Roselli who is normally a strong time trailer had a mechanical issue that relegated him to the B-Main which he won followed by Brett Conklin to advance to the A-Main.

In an unfortunate turn of events four of the top running cars were disqualified for a tread width infraction that was found during post race inspection. This put Ryan Susie in second position followed by Anthony Payne moving into a podium finish of third place in his first race on Wall's inner oval. Tom Fraschetta was fourth with perennial ATQMRA Championship contender Ryan Tidman fifth and 2014 ATQMRA Rookie of the year Geoffrey Sutton sixth. Tim Proctor finished seventh followed by ATQMRA regular Shawn McCaughey, Mark Yoder was ninth with Jeff Kot rounding out the top ten.

A follow up meeting to the October 21st Elections meeting is scheduled for Sunday December 6th at 10am.  The meeting will be held at the Best Western Ft Washington, 285 Commerce Drive, Fort Washington, PA.  It is located right at the exit from the turnpike.  An agenda will be sent out by December 1st. The meeting will give all those with an interest in continuing the growth of the ATQMRA an opportunity to voice their opinions about the direction of the organization.

ATQMRA News and Notes:The ATQMRA Turkey Derby was a who's who of indoor three Quarter midget racing with cars and stars that frequent the indoor events put on by the Sammons family each year. Countless wins were represented in the field with Liquid Lou Cicconi racing the car that Ted Christopher used to win numerous indoor feature events. The team battled gremlins in the engine management system all day. ATQMRA and ARDC Veteran Steve Craig made a return to the ranks of the ATQMRA after a several year absence. Joey Payne III made laps on the day in the Bruce Leote 26 car making his first Turkey Derby appearance in TQ competition and also marking the first time he was on track in competition with his father Joey Jr. and brother Anthony.

Sload Caps a Championship Season by Winning Mahoning

ATQMRA goes 4 wide to salute the fans

Buddy Sload did what he had to do to earn the 2015 ATQMRA Championship by winning the feature to earn his first ATQMRA Championship after spending several seasons in the bridesmaid position. Ryan Tidman's third place finish in the Boyd Owned 1B earned the team the 2015 car owner's Championship. Mike Glaser of Jackson, NJ capped his first full season with the ATQMRA by earning the coveted title of ATQMRA Rookie of the year. Next up for the ATQRMA is the Annual Turkey Derby at Wall Stadium that will feature an indoor rules package and $1,000 to win. Heat Races were won by Buddy Sload and Mahoning Valley Modified Star Kris Graver.

The front row of Mike Glaser and Shawn McCaughey led the field in an impressive four abreast parade lap salute to the fans. The start saw McCaughey accelerate into the lead with Championship contender Ryan Tidman advancing from his fifth starting spot to second. Tidman overtook McCaughey on lap four and started to open an advantage on the field.

A caution on lap nine set off a sequence of events that would affect the championship outcome. Calls were made against Tidman, who is exceptionally good on starts, for jumping the restart not once by twice relegating him to the back of the pack for the restart. Several cars were involved in incidents on the aborted starts but were given their positions back as a result.

This sequence of events put the hard charging Buddy Sload the outside pole for the restart alongside McCaughey. Tidman would be relegated to making his championship charge from the rear of the field. Sload would take the lead on the ensuing restart and Tidman would begin his charge back through the field. 2014 ATQMRA Champion Matt Janisch would move into second but wasn't able to mount a serious challenge to Sload.

Tidman raced through the field in impressive fashion finishing a solid third place on a track that has been very good to him over the years. It was enough to earn the Car owner's Championship for the 1B car owned by Lenny and Donna Boyd but not enough for him to earn another driver's title.

In his first full season of circle track racing after a successful drag racing career Mike Glaser of Jackson, NJ won the 2015 ATQMRA Rookie of the year title with a fourteenth place finish. Glaser ran very well in his heat race but struggled in the feature. After a spinning and dumping the car on its side he was able to recover to finish fourteenth out of the 19 cars at the event earning enough points to best his fellow Rookie of the year candidate Patrick Force.

Buddy Sload ran away with the first heat race besting McCaughey Jeff Kot Tidman, and Jansich with Mark Rogers earning the final transfer position.

Thee second heat saw a continuation of the impressive laps posted by Mahoning Valley Speedway Modified Star Kris Graver in the Janisch 48x that won the 2014 ATQMRA Championship. He posted the second fastest lap in practice being bested by only the Sload racing 53 driven by BJ MacDonald. Graver was followed across the line by 2013 ATQMRA Rookie of the year Joey Bailey, Pat VanVarick, Mike Glaser, 2015 NEMA Lites Champion Anthony Payne making his first ATQMRA Start, and BJ MacDonald.

ATQMRA News and Notes:    2015 NEMA Lite Midget Champion Anthony Payne made his first start with the ATQMRA at Mahoning Valley Speedway. Payne is the son of multi-time ATQMRA and NEMA midget Champion and Supermodified Star Joey Payne and the grandson of Joe Payne Sr. who is considered royalty in ATQMRA circles. This makes Anthony a third generation of Payne racing with the ATQMRA. His night was cut short after turning impressive laps in the immaculately prepared Laffler Chassis car when he tangled with a lap car. 2015 NYPA Champion Kyle Hutchinson took on the ATQMRA regulars and was running competitive laps on the tricky Mahoning Valley circle when he was involved in a tangle on an aborted restart ending his day. Top running ATQMRA Racer Matt Roselli who is always a threat to win at Mahoning Valley had his day cut short by an uncharacteristic engine failure in practice.
