2021 Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic ATQMRA powered by VP Racing Fuels Season Preview

Staff Report | Monday, May 3rd, 2021

HOWELL, NJ- The American Three Quarter Midget Racing Association is set to embark on its 66th year of competition this Saturday and the fast and physically demanding Mahoning Valley Speedway.

Mahoning Valley continues to retain its traditional position on the ATQMRA schedule as the season opener for the organization. The Lehigh Valley oval will kick off a 15 point championship race season spanning across 4 states from May through November.

The tour will visit Bethel Motor Speedway for three events, including the Joe Payne Sr. Memorial and the ATQMRA Championship this year. The New London-Waterford Speedbowl is on tap for 2 events both this June and October.

Wall Stadium Speedway continues to be the “home” of the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic ATQMRA powered by VP Racing Fuels, hosting nine points paying events prior to the ATQMRA’s premier event, Turkey Derby XLVIII on November 27th, 2021- the official end of Northeast Outdoor Motorsports completion for the year.

CHAMPIONSHIP PICTURE

Due to the unprecedented circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, points were not scored, officially, for the 2020 season. With that, Joey Bailey officially retained his championship title for another year.

Bailey’s last win came at the The New London-Waterford Speedbowl last October. The #1B Boyd Racing Team followed their win up with a pair of second place finishes at Bethel last November and Turkey Derby this past March. Joey will certainly be a force to be reckon with in this year’s points championship and has a great chance to defend his 2019 title.

2015 Champion Buddy Sload is coming off an extended break due to a season ending incident at Waterford last fall. Expect the #36 Spitfire Racing Team to come back fresh this season with a fast car out of the gate. Sload finished 2nd at Mahoning last June after winning there the year prior.

Jeff Kot and the Behrents Performance Warehouse team had a career year last season, winning at both Mahoning Valley Speedway and Wall Stadium last summer. Kot hopes to have another career year, balancing two schedules between his championship TQ efforts and new venture on dirt during his rookie season racing USAC SpeedSTR’s.

Whether you consider it ending 2020 strong or starting 2021 off right, Kyle Taraska and the Chick-fil-A/Personal Comfort team made a strong statement leading wire to wire and winning Turkey Derby XLVII this past March. Taraska, the 2018 ATQMRA Rookie of the Year, has two career feature victories which both happened at Wall Stadium. You would have to imagine with nine points races down the Jersey Shore this season, it will play in Taraska’s favor as he chases his first career championship.

In what was an off-year for the Alan Mollot 51’s in 2020, you can never count out either team at an ATQMRA sanctioned race. The 51S, currently driven by former ATQMRA Rookie of the Year and previous Turkey Derby Champion Geoffrey Sutton, is officially the championship winning defending car of the organization from 2019. Ryan Tidman’s stats in the ATQMRA are synonymous, highlighted by his five driver championships. Expect Sutton and Tidman to be apart of the conversation by the time we hit the first week of November this year.

STRONG ROOKIE CLASS

The ATQMRA RYNO Classifieds Rookie of the Year Award will certainly be one of the most well-earned Rookie Titles in recent memory.

Brianna Page and the #76 A&A Truck Parts Team lead the charge in the pre-season rookie battle. Page, who has a wealth of quarter midget experience and multiple starts behind the wheel of a TQ Midget, remained eligible for Rookie Honors after no official scoring took place in 2020 due to COVID-19. Page may have a jump start on the boys, but this season will not be a cake walk for her to earn potential Rookie and Championship honors.

Tyler Ferris, a WKA Karting National Champion, became a staple of TQ Midget Competition at Wall Stadium over the past year or so in his #33 Hamer Heating and Cooling TQ Midget. Ferris set the second fastest time in Turkey Derby time trials this past March prior to earning a respectable 7th place finish. Ferris seeks to be a threat this year for Rookie Honors.

East Coast TQ Midgets Champion Tyler Wagner is also set to begin his ATQMRA Championship and Rookie campaign at Mahoning this weekend. Wagner will be racing for long-time driver and supporter of the ATQMRA, Dave Gorbatuk. Wagner debuted in the #32 Spitfire Chassis this past March resulting in a 12th place finish.

Other Rookie of the year notables include Robert Willis and the #27 team after making their TQ debut at Wall Stadium at Turkey Derby this March. #44P Chris Pelcher and #01 Ken Moody Jr. are set to make their ATQMRA debuts at Mahoning Valley Speedway this weekend.

BREAKOUT YEAR?

Mark Yoder and the #75 family-managed Ames Construction Team has been knocking on the door year after year seeking his first career feature win. Yoder and his family have been long-time supporters of the ATQMRA and we can’t think of anyone who would be upset to see the #75 earn a trophy, and potentially a championship in 2021!

Speaking of long-time supporters, Tim Proctor and the #98 has one career ATQMRA Feature victory and will be looking for more in 2021. Proctor is one of the most respected racers in the club running consistently in the top-10. While only running part-time, Proctor seeks to continue to be a force to be reckon with in 2021.

As for part-time racers, Anthony Payne and the #12 Dent Zones team and Avery Stoehr in the #23 Badger are expected to run strong each time they hit the track this season. Payne and Stoehr, as always, are expected to run part-time in the ATQMRA this year as they balance their NEMA Lite Midget schedules. Nonetheless, each team will be a threat to win as they both seek their first under the ATQMRA banner.

Joey Payne III will look to return this year on a more consistent basis and in a more competitive form. He only made one start as a driver in 2020. However, he made one start as an owner overseeing Tommy Lane earn a top-10 finish in his late-brother’s Memorial Race at Wall Stadium last July. The JJ Lane Memorial returns to Wall Stadium on September 25th.

Expect racing veterans Steve Craig and Paul Dodorico to return to the ATQMRA in limited roles in 2021. Dodorico earned his first career victory as an owner when Ryan Tidman piloted his #55 Spitfire Chassis to victory lane at Bethel Motor Speedway last November.

Mike Glaser and the #2 Aqua Solutions team had a respectable showing at Turkey Derby this past March earning a 10th place finish. Glaser will look to continue the momentum into 2021. Bill Force Jr. Is also expected to compete in the ATQMRA this year in a newly purchased chassis.

While many unknowns remain heading into The Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic ATQMRA powered by VP Racing Fuels season, the stands will soon be shaking and records will be shattered as the organization begins the 66th year of Premier TQ Midget Competition this weekend.

Excitement Building for Turkey Derby XLVII

Staff Report | Monday, March 22nd, 2021

WALL TOWNSHIP, NJ- The Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic ATQMRA powered by VP Racing Fuels is set to compete for the first time since November in Turkey Derby XLVII at Wall Stadium Speedway this Saturday. After being delayed for over four months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, teams and fans alike are anxiously waiting to return to the track and regain normalcy heading into the new year.

Kyle Taraska and the #22 Chick-fil-A, Personal Comfort car were the fastest team in town at Wall Stadium Speedway last weekend. Taraska set himself as a pre-race favorite by posting a blistering 12.973 second lap time in Turkey Derby XLVII on Sunday afternoon.

Taraska has one career feature win to-date in the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic ATQMRA powered by VP Racing Fuels, which happened at Wall Stadium in 2018. While Taraska will have many eyes on him this weekend at his home track, he will not be the only hard charger seeking his first wreath at this premier event.

Jeff Kot and the #95 Behrents Performance Warehouse team will also be a force to be reckoned with. Kot posted the second fastest time of practice, coming in at a 13.099 this past weekend. Kot certainly feels like this race owes him one. In the 2018 running of the event, Kot and Buddy Sload put on a duel for the ages. A poorly timed caution caused Kot to give the lead back to Sload by default after passing him under green. Sload went on to win the race. Expect Kot to seek redemption at Wall Stadium this Saturday.

The feel-good story of the final practice weekend was the #76 A&A Truck Parts Team of Brianna Page. Page was fastest of all teams in Saturday practice which resulted in the third fastest practice time of the weekend. Page ended 2020 with a lot of momentum, most notably earning a top-5 finish at The New London-Waterford Speedbowl last fall in her first attempt at the ATQMRA’s fastest track. Page will look to put on a strong showing and put her name in the record books in Turkey Derby XLVII.

Defending ATQMRA Champion Joey Bailey and the #1B Boyd Racing Team are always expected to be a threat on Wall Stadium’s inner oval. Bailey is another driver also seeking his first Turkey Derby championship. The Boyd family looks to return to victory lane for the first time since another pre-race favorite, Ryan Tidman won the event with them in 2017.

While the Alan Mollot cars were absent from practice this weekend, do not count out either team to hoist a trophy this Saturday afternoon. Although in a different car, Geoffrey Sutton is the defending champion of ATQMRA Turkey Derby. The last car to win at Turkey Derby, the #51, will now be driven by Ryan Tidman whose success has already been noted.

Indoor Series Champion and Atlantic City Gambler’s Classic Champion Ryan Flores will compete in Turkey Derby in the #66 Chris DeRitis owned car as he seeks his first victory in the historic race. With over-the-wall pit crews not required in the NASCAR Cup Series Bristol Dirt Race, Flores will make the most of his off weekend traveling north to his home track of Wall Stadium. What a story it would be for Flores, and his full-time employer, the #2 Penske Team of Brad Keselowski, to sweep this weekend of racing.

Other notables who practiced last weekend include former Wall Stadium feature winner, Tim Proctor, Jackson, NJ’s Mike Glaser, RYNO.co Rookie Contender Tyler Wagner, and ATQMRA regular and Albany Indoor Series Champion Anthony Payne.

The Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic ATQMRA powered by VP Racing Fuels will be the opening feature of day two of Turkey Derby XLVII. The action kicks off at 10:30 AM on Saturday, March 27th, 2021 with practice. Qualifying will begin around 12:00 PM with the 30-lap feature to follow at 3:00 PM.

Fans will have many options to spectate Turkey Derby this weekend. While a limited number of grandstand and pit passes are available per New Jersey social distancing guidelines, fans will also have the opportunity to watch a live pay-per-view broadcast of a full day of racing on Dirt Track Digest TV. For more details, visit wallspeedwayracing.com.

Following the conclusion of Turkey Derby XLVII, at ATQMRA will take just over a month off prior to kicking off the 2021 championship points season at Mahoning Valley Speedway on Saturday, May 8th.

While the focus remains on the rescheduled Turkey Derby XLVII later this month, the attention will soon turn to the 2021 Points Championship season for the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic ATQMRA powered by VP Racing Fuels.

The 15 points-paying event season will kick off at its traditional season opener at Mahoning Valley on Saturday, May 8th. Jeff Kot and the Behrents Performance TQ Midget will look to defend his crown after returning to victory lane at Mahoning last spring in the Jack Bertling Memorial.

For the first time since 2019, a champion will be crowned at Bethel Motor Speedway on November 6th. Joey Bailey looks to defend his title and earn his first championship for the Boyd Racing Team. In total, Bethel Motor Speedway will host the ATQMRA three times this year. Included on the schedule is the Pine Brook Reunion/ Joe Payne Sr. Memorial on June 26th.

Buddy Sload and the #36 Spitfire Chassis team will look to defend their title at the second annual JJ Lane Memorial on September 25th.

The 10th event at Wall Stadium, will be capped off with Turkey Derby XLVIII on its traditional Thanksgiving weekend date, on Saturday November 27th. Just like this March and every other November, Turkey Derby XLVIII will be a high stakes, non-points exhibition.

The Hoosier Tire-Mid Atlantic ATQMRA powered by VP Racing Fuels will pick up right where it left off after a difficult 2020 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. A diverse field and a strong rookie class will be just some of the many story lines that lie ahead of a new season!

East Coast Champ Wagner All Set for Turkey Derby XLVII

Staff Report | Wednesday, November 18th,
2020

East Coast TQ Midgets Champion Tyler Wagner will be making the step up to the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic ATQMRA powered by VP Racing Fuels next weekend at Turkey Derby XLVII.

Wagner’s racing career began in 2010 at the age of 9 racing microstocks. It wouldn’t be long before whom many consider to a natural talent, to win his first career race in the microstock class at the age of 11. Simultaneously, Wagner became one the youngest winners in Mahoning Valley Speedway history with the victory.

After beginning his racing career in TQ midgets in 2018, Wagner capped off a successful season of winning 5 of 7 events, earning the championship in the East Coast TQ Midgets division in 2020.

Wagner has not only spent time competing in Race of Champions TQ Midget events, but Wagner also spent Speedweeks in Florida with The Mighty TQ Midgets. It was here where his relationship began with current ATQMRA owner Dave Gorbatuk.

“He wanted me to race his car in select ATQMRA events this year back in February before COVID-19 hit,” said Wagner of Gorbatuk. “We put the deal together to run Turkey Derby together a couple of weeks ago and I’ve been helping him work on the car at his shop ever since.”

Gorbatuk, the 2017 ATQMRA Rookie of the Year, will be entering his #32 Spitfire Chassis in its first event of the season next weekend, and his first time as an owner-only.

Wagner, admittedly excited for the opportunity and a new challenge hopes to make the most of his chance behind the wheel of an ATQMRA TQ Midget.

“I’m really excited about my debut in the series. I love racing against new competition and learning a new track in a TQ. What better way to do it than in the biggest race of the year!”

The Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic ATQMRA powered by VP Racing Fuels will officially close out the 2020 season at Turkey Derby XLVII at Wall Stadium Speedway on Saturday, November 28th, 2020.
